I believe everyone will go through internship be it during their Poly days or in University. It gives you an idea on how the workforce is like and the valuable experiences that you will take away.
Before starting your internship, I’m sure you may be worried about and it and may not know what and how to prepare for it. I’ll share some tips that I have found useful for internship.
1. Dress Code
Dressing is really important as it helps out with your first impression. Usually on the first day, you may want to go overboard with the formality of your clothing to play safe. Come in with your presentation clothes and you will be good to go!
Observe your surroundings on how the standards are like. For guys, I would say collared shirt, formal pants and formal shoes are the ideal dressing. For girls, dresses will be the stress-free option for you if you are not sure on how to match your top and bottom. Flats or heals will be great especially in the Central Business District (CBD) area. If you are comfortable, put on a little makeup to look presentable.
From my research, try not to put on a heavy scented perfume/cologne as your colleagues may have sensitive noses.
Adaptability is highly sought after by employers as they want workers who can adapt to new changes readily. Processes can be changed anytime and you have to be ready for it.
Friendliness. Try to be friend with all your colleagues as they may be asked to provide feedback on you. Not only for feedback, when you need help, your colleagues will not hesitate to help you. This is a good way to build up your networking skills and your social circle. Who knows, you may cross paths with them in the future.
3. Never say “NO”
It is always better if you can take on the task that you are assigned to or when your help is needed for and for ad-hoc task. By doing many tasks, you not only gain knowledge but also hone your time management skills. Different tasks have different datelines and you’ll have to deliver them. Prioritize the ones that needs to be submitted earlier and also based on the importance.
Do you like it if your employees are late for work and do work sloppily? I guess not. Try to be punctual always. Although it is just being on time for work, it creates an impression of you and people judge you for who you are based on that. This also shows a lot of your personality too. Whether or not you treat this internship serious and whether you are a serious worker.
These are my top tips for internship! Good luck for those who are entering their internship and most importantly, enjoy!
